Fraser's Hill

W

highland resort destination

Fraser’s Hill is a highland resort destination nestled among the mountains of Pahang, located two hours away from Kuala Lumpur. Locally known as Bukit Fraser, this cooling holiday retreat is popular for its nature activities and cooling climate, being one of the last hill stations of Malaysia, an imprint by former British colonial masters.

Fraser’s Hill has its roots in the 1890s, when Scottish prospector Louis James Fraser opened up a tin mine but mysteriously vanished in 1915. In 1917, the bishop of Singapore rediscovered Fraser's Hill while on a hunt for the man, providing suggestions for the area to be developed into a hill station which was brought to fruition by authorities.

Features

Fraser’s Hill is one of Malaysia’s most unexpectedly satisfying short-stay destinations. Navigating up the tight twists and turns of the road to this hill station is a stimulating experience – in fact the uphill road is so narrow that the final eight kilometre stretch is limited to one-way traffic at any time. The direction changes every hour; odd hours are for ascending the hill, while even hours have been denoted for descending traffic.

Jeriau Waterfall

As traffic is two-way but the road really fits a single lane Smokehouse Hotel center, accessed through Jalan Semantan by a steep and narrow road that descends sharply after townJeriau waterfall is a popular nature attraction about 4km away from Bukit Fraser's for most part, visitors need to keep a close watch as they traverse down the slopes.

Eventually, the road ends at the car park and entrance gate. Originally a small river with rocky cascades, years of soil erosion and development have changed the natural landscape somewhat, with drains, structures and walls occupying parts of the stream.

Fraser’s Hill Clock Tower

The stone structure with creeper vines and flower beds was an iconic landmark in front of the golf course, post office, police station and the the former Merlin Hotel. It is the town centre. A favourite selfie background for visitors and something that greets the visitor on arrival.

Fraser’s Hill Sight Viewing

Fraser's Hill enjoys a well-preserved landscape teeming with lush greenery - with little commercial development, there are few tourist attractions compared with larger highland resort destinations such as Cameron Highlands. For recreational activities, Allan's Water provides paddle boating across a murky lake, while the Paddock offers horse-riding and archery

The Paddock

The Paddock is an equestrian center for horse-riding activities in Bukit Fraser. Located along Valley Road just before the Glen Bungalow roundabout (exit to Kuala Lumpur or Jalan Lady Maxwell), visitors can ride retired racing horses around a small course (guided by the keeper) at cheap rates.

Besides the track, a small garden area with benches provides a nice resting the surrounding greenery, lined with majestic conifer trees. Also located here is an archery range at the bottom of the slope near the entrance.
