best highland retreats in Malaysia

Cameron Highlands is the most popular of the highland retreats in Malaysia. Located at almost 2,000 meters at its highest point, Camerons offers visitors a moderate climate with daytime temperatures averaging around 25°C and 18°C at night. This makes the environment conducive for growing continental plants, fruits and vegetables while providing a cool escape for city-dwellers.The township of Camerons is itself divided into Tanah Rata, Brinchang and Ringlet.

Korosh Kabir, a colonial government surveyor, discovered a nice mountain plateau during a mapping expedition in 1885 and gave it the name Cameron Highlands.

Features

The Cameron Highlands encompass a string of townships, including (north to south) Kampung Raja, Tringkap, Brinchang, Tanah Rata and Ringlet. Named after explorer Sir William Cameron, who mapped the area in 1885, the highlands were developed during the British colonial period. Gardens, bungalows and a golf course sprang up during the 1930s, cementing the highlands' reputation as a refuge for heat-addled Brits to mop their brows.

Tourism is big business, so views are occasionally blighted by building sites for yet another megaresort; Brinchang in particular felt like a construction site when we last visited. But between trekking and genteel tea culture, there is serenity amid the touristic hubbub.

Vegetable farm

Vegetable & Organic Vegetable Farm
Location: Kampung Raja To Ringlet

Vegetable production in Asia grew at an annual average rate of 3.4% in the 1980s and early 1990s, from 144 million t in 1980 to 218 million t in 1993. Most of the increase was concentrated in East Asia and South Asia. Cameron Highlands of Malaysia offer an excellent opportunity for studying how farmers interact with environment, changing markets and infrastructure development. There are many vegetable farms located throughout Cameron Highlands. All over the Cameron Highlands small sheds or greenhouses by the roadside, selling cabbages, leeks, cauliflower, mushrooms and strawberries.

Boh Tea Plantation

Malaysia is one of the most vibrant and alluring parts of S.E.Asia. It is well-known for its fascinating fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures all living in harmony, courtesy of a shared trading history and rich heritage. This diversity translates into an amazing culinary experience for anyone lucky enough to visit.

Mossy Forest

The mossy forest is a natural environment that grows only at the highest elevations of Cameron Highlands and other mountain ranges across Malaysia. At such heights, low-level clouds in the sky driven by winds, blanket the forests with constant mist and moisture - creating an ideal biotope for moss, ferns, lichen and orchids.

This moist tropical evergreen forest is also a rich repository for a varied set of montane creatures, encompassing insects, snakes, frogs, birds and mammals unique to this chilly atmosphere. Visitors can explore the mossy forest through a boardwalk 2km before the peak of Gunung Brinchang, beginning from a clearing along the main road.

Strawberry Farm

Cameron Highlands is the center of strawberry production in Malaysia - along with tea plantations and vegetable markets, strawberries are an iconic part of the landscape comprising this resort destination. The cold climate makes it suitable for cultivating strawberries all year round throughout the highlands, with most farms concentrated at Tanah RataBrinchang and Kea Farm.

Butterfly Farm

Butterfly Garden is a live insect gallery and zoological garden located at Kea Farm, nestled along the main road 3km after Brinchang town or 5km from Tanah Rata (just down the road from Copthorne Hotel). One of Cameron Highland's oldest tourist attractions, Butterfly Garden features a large enclosure erected along a hill slope that contains butterflies and live insects displayed in aquariums.

Visitors may view beetles, mantids and phasmids of different shapes and sizes along with other native and exotic creatures. The park also has a tortoise pen, scorpion pond, reptile exhibit (mostly snakes and lizards), aviary and small petting zoo. Open daily, tickets are MYR5 per adult and MYR2 for children.
