WORLD's Largest UNinhabited mangroves
An old Malay legend has it that the island was once the abode of five celestial princesses. Their peaceful existence was shattered one day when one of them fell in love with a sailor, and against all device, eloped. A dreadful curse befell the place, and the island was engulfed by the sea. It later re-emerged. However, unlike every other island around Johor, this one was totally covered in mangroves.

Features
Today, Pulau Kukup has received international recognition, being granted the status of a 'Wetland of International Importance' (RAMSAR site). Kukup is one of the largest uninhabited mangroves in the world. It is also the only one situated in Johor waters. Pulau Geneva-based Ramsar Convention Bureau. A local folklore tells the tale of Pulau Kukup, an abode for five celestial princesses. One day, one of them fell in love with a sailor and they eloped. A curse was set upon the island of Kukup and it was submerged by the sea. The island later resurfaced, but it was covered in mangroves. Many have tried to settle on this island, but without success. Some say this is because the island is inhabited by spirits. Pulau Kukup is today the home of countless species of wildlife. Among these are playful monkeys, quiet mudskippers and nosy wild boars. Tanjung Piai National Park

Fish Farm
Fish farms are commonly referred to as Kelong in the local dialect. Most of the villagers in Kukup are fishermen, some go to fishing on the Kukup sea while others set up fish farms near the village.
Since the 1980s, some of the fish farms are open for tourist visitation to experience their daily activities. Hence, tourist can take a boat tour to the fish farms and get a look at how the fish are being raised, it is guaranteed to be eye-opening!
Sea Kelong
In case you arrive in Kukup before lunch, you should take a boat ride to Kelong. You will get a great view of the villages built on water and get some delicious fish and mussels when you arrive in Kelong.


Shop For
Local Products
You will find some shops selling local snacks, confectionery and keropok (fish or prawn crackers). Another popular item to purchase here is salted fish, a Kukup speciality! These well-preserved fish can be purchased in bulk and cooked according to your preferences back home (curry sounds like a fantastic choice!). Tip: Aside from salted fish, you can also buy their local belacan (chilli paste) and cencalok (fermented shrimp paste).
