Features

Perak's finest colonial architecture stands side by side with rickety kedai kopi (coffee shops) in chameleonic Ipoh. The capital of Perak is flanked by towering white cliffs, some with magnificent cave temples pocketed in the limestone. Sliced into old and new towns by the Kinta River, Ipoh charms with its street art and street food – rather like a languid version of George Town.

 

Ipoh is more than a gateway to the Cameron Highlands or a way station en route to Penang. Shaped by the 1920s tin-mining boom, Ipoh's wealth and population ebbed away after the mines' closure. But an old-town renaissance has revived its time-worn buildings into boutiques, hotels and gorgeously kitsch cafes.

 

Food is reason enough to visit. Malaysian and Singaporean gastronomes arrive in droves for Ipoh's tauge ayam (chicken bean sprouts) and to argue over who serves the best kopi putih – white coffee, the town's signature drink.

Xin Quan Fang Curry Noodles

Xin Quan Fang, fondly known as ‘ma ta liu curry mee’ to locals churns out inarguably the best Hainanese curry mee and bean sprouts in town. It is just a stone’s throw away from the famous Nasi Ganja. Funny how two of the most famous food in Ipoh are just across a street from each other. 

 

You can opt for a variety of additional toppings here including roast pork, poached chicken, char siew and prawns. If you opt for the large portion, the side dishes are served in a separate bowl. It’s better this way, as it won’t add any foreign flavor to the noodle. The curry broth, although light, has a distinctively sharp and aromatic taste of spices that’s totally unique to Ipoh.

Tong Sui Kai

Tong Sui Kai (Dessert Street) is one of the most happening eating places in Ipoh after the sun sets. The street is lined with dozens of food stalls mostly selling desserts (hence the name), snacks like rojak, boiled cockles and various noodles.

 

Most of the people who come here are for Ipoh’s famed mixed fruits ABC. Every stall has its own unique rendition and presentation and there are dozens of them, that alone is a reason to return for more. 

Qing Xin Ling Leisure & Cultural Village

You might think you’ve stepped back in time, to a place in the past, maybe in China, when you visit Qing Xin Ling Leisure and Cultural Village. But this park is really in Ipoh, Perak.

With its art installation and wall paintings, the park has a nostalgic theme. Built around an emerald lake partly, and surrounded by limestone hills and caves, the name of the park means “serene hill” in Mandarin.

Pasir Pinji Chee Cheong Fun

Another must-try during an Ipoh Food Trip has to be this home-based Chee Cheong Fun at Pasir Pinji.

Located along a secluded road at Pasir Pinji, this hideout requires some accurate navigation to get here. If you’re at Pasir Pinji Big Tree Foot, it’s good to spare some tummy space to savour this delicious Chee Cheong Fun.
